The Manchurian Candidate was a novel by Richard Condon, first published in 1959.The novel has been adapted twice into a feature film with the same title, in 1962 and again in 2004. The 1962 film is faithful to the book; the 2004 remake updates the action and alters characters.  It is a political thriller about the son of a prominent U.S. political family who is brainwashed into being an unwitting assassin for a Communist conspiracy. 


1962 MOVIE: Directed by John Frankenheimer. With Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury. A former prisoner of war is brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy.


2004 MOVIE: Directed by Jonathan Demme. With Denzel Washington, Liev Schreiber, Meryl Streep, Kimberly Elise. In the midst of the Gulf War, soldiers are kidnapped and brainwashed for sinister purposes.
